hate exams to theee core! :(HISTORY BITES :i really hope it helps me. (: Treaty of Versailles, signed in june 1919. One problem with the treaty was that the various Allies who came to discuss it has very different aims. This was so even if only the aims of the 'Big Three'-Usa, France & Britain were considered.
The big 3.Britain, Lloyd George wanted Germany to be punished. He promised Britain that he would make sure that Germany paid a high price- therefore could not afford to be seen to be too careful of Germany's feelings.
France, Clemenceau wanted France to be save from attack from Germany. Many french people were pressing him for revenge against germany.
USA, Wilson wanted a peace that was fair and that would cause the least resentment. He wanted Germany to be punished, but not too much. He wanted world peace.
How germany reacted to the TreatyGermany was not allowed to join the peace negotiations nor had been allowed to negotiate the armistice that ended the way. Many germans called the TOV a piece of dictation. The new foreign minister resigned rather than to sign the treaty. But another delegate signed the treaty, but said he would sign becoz it was under compulsion.
The League of NationsIt was set up as part of the TOV.
Comprised -An assembly, met once a year.
-A council, met more regularly to consider crisis
-small secretatariat to handle paper work
-Court of International justice
The Aims of the League.-Discourage aggression from any nation
-Discourage countries to co-operate especially in business&trade
-Encourage nation to disarm.
-Improve the living&working conditions of people in the world
Sucesses of LON,
??????????????????
Strengths of LON,
dealing with
social issues such as improving living conditions& working conditions worldwide. Also, the league was very successful in dealing with
health issues: set up commissions that imporved living conditions in poorer countries& targetted treatment of specific diseases.
Weaknesses of LON,
Weakest in dealing with issues that nations saw as a threat to their security.
Attitudes of the League: treaties were unpopular & so the league was affected. Countries that had agreed with the league did not always take it seriously.
Membership was another biug weakness of the league. USA did not join, Germany, Austria& Hungary were not allowed to. It was possible for people to join & leave the League quite easily which means tht there was a constant shift of members states.
Mandates, a mandate was the legal right to govern under the control of the League. LON took over most of Germany's old colonies.
The LON stressed the need for cooperation bewtween nations. it expected nations to accpet the League's decisions in disputes. League members could punish other members for not obeying the league by applying sanctions.
BLABLABLA Disarmament: ????????
Reasons of failure.-Sanctions did not work it had no army.
-America, the strongest nation in the world did not join.
-The league took very long to do anything.
-Worldwide depression caused them to worry bout themselves, not about world peace.
-Lesser and lesser people trusted the league the more it fails.
-Italy&Japan betrayed(left) the league& Britain+France did not do anything to help.
-More powerful countries like Germ, Italy, Jap attacked the weaker countries &was too strong for the League to stop them.
Communist RussiaHow did Stalin come to power and what was life under Stalinist regime?Tsar of Russia was overthrown by a revolution. There was chaos after that. After Tsar was gone, people who had been in the parliment acted as a provisional gov till new elections could be held. Members of the provisional gov were not communist. Its hold on power was very weak.
The provisional government had done the worst possible thing for its survival. It was not acting on the issues that had sparked the revolution. It had also, by its liberal reforms, given its critics the chance to attack.
One of the most popular opposing party was the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin. In October 1917, the Bolsheviks led a second revolution, the seized power from the provisional gov.
The bolsheviks acted very quickly.
They signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with Germany& left the war (terms were harsh but they did not had much choice). They renamed themselves as Communist party (CP) and Russia became known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
They used police and army to silence opposition. They were no longer part of WWI which was stll going on, but they were involved in a Civil war. The bolsheviks won the civil war in 1921.
The Bolsheviks has imposed War Communism during the Civil war
as the only way to win the war.
BLABLABLA.
The Russian economy began to recover, but Lenin became ill. And after he died, there were four main contenders to take over him: Kaminev, Zinoviev, Trotsky& Stalin.
Stalin won the leadership contest, and
WHY?
Because he had been working for the leadership. While Trotsky did whatever Lenin told him to do for the good of CP, Stalin focused on consolidating his power than on the running of the country. He saw the advantage of sticking close to Lenin.
Stalin made sure he looked after Lenin when L's health worsened. Lenin learnt about Stalin's desire to attain the leadership and was truiong to stop him.
When Lenin died, (in 1924) Stalin gave the funeral speech as chief mourner. To the Russian people, he looked like the obviosu nect leader. Once Stalin gained power, he planned for the USSR economy. He needed the Russian people to obey the gov without thinking, to work hard to meet his demands. He kept tight control by a mixture of propaganda & terror.
Stalin introduced the Five Year Plans. This brought all industry under state control and all industrial development was planned by the state. The state would decide what would be produced, how much would be produced and where it should be produced. An organisation called Gosplan was created to plan all this out.
-The first five year plan was from 1928 to 1932.
-The second five year plan was from 1933 to 1937.
-The third five year plan was from 1938 to 1941 when the war interrupted it.
Controlling the workers,Life was very hard for industrial workers. Their pay was poor and there was barely anything they could spend their money on even if they had any. Consumer goods were simply not produced. Working conditions were very dangerous and the hours were long. The homes that were provided were poor.
People were encouraged to work hard by propaganda which bombarded the workers in all directions.
Rewards were given to the best workers.
Punishment was also used by those who did not work hard. The fear of the labour camps was usually enough to get people working hard. A lot of hard physical labour was done by prisoners. It did not matter if they died - only that the task was completed.
For all the problems and hardship caused by the Five Year Plans by 1941, Stalin had transformed Russia into a world class industrial power.
COLLECTIVISATION.Stalin decided to take all farmland and set up huge state-runs farms called collectives. Peasant workers kept enough to feed themselves and sold the rest to the state @ a fixed price. They were given modern machinary and trained to use efficient farming methods.
Under collectivisation, peasants could not own land or sell food privately. Low production or absence from work resulted in punishment. However, the state provided home, food, fuel, clothing, healthcare and education for the workers under collectivisation.
Resistance, was one thing Stalin could not afford to allow to collectivisation. Millions were sent to forcer labour camps.
Collectivisation worked.
By 1940, almost all farms were collectives (97% if peasants). When the modern machineries given to them broken down, many peasants revert back to traditional & inefficient working farming methods.
*Propaganda is the deliberate spreading of ideas and information for the purpose of promoting a specific cause.FASLE INFORMATION.
Stalin's gov regularly fed people with false info. He lied and made Trotsky looked like a bad person.
USING FEAR.Stalin policies were hard on people living in the USSR. State propaganda to convince people to make sacrifices, opposition to Stalin grew in 1930s. Hardships of industrialisation and collectivisation were worsened by the 1932 famine.
Show trials, Many were accused of plotting with Trotsky+ many of those on trial confessed to crimes they had not committed, ofeten after torture or threats to their family.
Labour Camps, has been there since communism begun. Stalinist set up many more. Prisoners were not paid and were given only very basic food, shelter and clothing. Many had been arrested/ constantly dying from bad camp conditions.
Purges, (is a medicine that clears impurities from your body.) Stalin's purges were supposed to clean out enemies of communism in the USSR,Many were arrested and sent to labour camp without anyone knowing what has happened to them.
Millions of people was purged.
